In this article, I’ll cover the best fun facts about Tenerife that you probably didn’t know before. So, buckle up and let’s explore this gorgeous Canary Island together! 

1. Tenerife Belongs to Spain

One of the fun facts about Tenerife is that it belongs to Spain. It is one of the many islands that Spain owns and is located in the Atlantic Ocean just off the coast of West Africa. 

Although it is a part of Spain, Tenerife has a unique culture and identity that sets it apart from the country. It is a popular tourist destination that attracts millions of visitors every year who come to enjoy and see what it has to offer.

These seven gorgeous islands are volcanic isles that are known for their black and white sand beaches and their natural beauty. The seven islands are called Tenerife, El Hierro, La Gomera, La Palma, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, and Gran Canaria

Actually, it is one of Europe’s most popular vacation destinations as it has all the proper infrastructure, facilities, and many types of accommodation. 

7. Tenerife Hosts One of the World’s Biggest Carnivals

Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is one of the literal fun facts about Tenerife. In fact, this carnival is the biggest in Spain and it is one of the biggest in the world. It is held in February or March of every year.

The carnival lasts for 15 days full of colourful parades, music, and dance performances. It’s a truly exhilarating experience and is definitely worth experiencing at least once in a lifetime.

9. Santa Cruz de Tenerife Is the Capital of Tenerife

10. There Are Pyramids in Tenerife

They are called the Pyramids of Güímar and are found in the district of Chacona, Güímar. There are six pyramids built from lava stone and each of them is around 13 feet high. Also, the origin of these pyramids is not known until today. 

The place where the pyramids are located is actually a museum where you will learn about the other pyramids around the world,  the civilizations behind them, and more!

One of the most beautiful and fun facts about Tenerife is that it has black-sand beaches. This phenomenon is due to the erosion of nearby cliffs, which are volcanic in origin. So the black sand is basically volcanic. 

Moreover, the black sand makes a magnificent contrast with the crystal-clear water. Some of the best black beaches in Tenerife are Playa Jardin, Playa de los Guios, Playa de Martiánez, Playa el Bollullo, Playa de la Arena, and more.

14. There Are 2 International Airports in Tenerife

Although Tenerife is an island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, it’s very well connected to the world. One of the fun facts about Tenerife is that it has not one but two international airports.

The larger one is Tenerife South Airport, also known as Reina Sofia Airport. It’s also one of the busiest airports in Spain. The smaller one is Tenerife North Airport, also known as Los Rodeos Airport.

The island is home to a variety of animal species, including birds, reptiles, and marine life. One of the most interesting wildlife species found in Tenerife is the blue chaffinch, which is the symbol of Tenerife according to the Canary Islands Government. 

Also, there is the Tenerife lizard, which is a species of lizard that is only found in Tenerife and La Palma. In addition to that, there are whales and dolphins that can be spotted off the coast of Tenerife and there are special tours for that.

The city has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its cultural and historical importance. It’s a well-preserved colonial town with original Islamic and European architecture

Besides being a culturally significant town, it is also a visually stunning city. It has narrow cobblestone streets and colourful houses, which gives the whole town a charming vibe.

20. Two Passenger Jets Collided in Tenerife

Unfortunately, there was an airport disaster in Tenerife. Two Boeing 747 passenger jets collided on the runway of North Tenerife International Airport. 583 people lost their lives in this crash. 

Many factors contributed to this disaster that occurred on March 27, 1977, including fog and bad communication.

Tenerife has such an amazing nightlife, which is one of the fun facts about Tenerife. It has a wide range of clubs that stay open until 6 in the morning! There are also beachfront parties, underground dance parties, and live music performances. 

25. The Auditorio De Tenerife Is an Iconic Architectural Landmark

The Auditorio De Tenerife is considered the finest contemporary building in the Canary Islands. This building is a true piece of art that was designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava. The building is an auditorium and it is built like there is a crashing wave that covers it.
